WHAT nutrients & foods are important as we head into the Fall months, and WHY?

Nutrients to focus on:

Vitamin D: as we say goodbye to sunshine it’s important to stay on top of vitamin D supplementation. A deficiency in vitamin D is associated with increased susceptibility to certain infections.

Vitamin C: a powerful antioxidant that stimulates immune cell activity. Foods that are high in vitamin C include oranges, grapefruit, red pepper, kiwi, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts.

Herbs to cook with:

Ginger: maintains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Fresh ginger may provide anti-viral activity against a certain type of common cold virus, and makes a nice soothing tea!

Garlic: the active component of garlic, allicin, maintains anti-microbial properties and is activated by crushing the garlic clove and allowing it to sit at room temperature before using.

Onion: also maintains anti-microbial activity and can be cooked up with most Autumn-inspired meals!
